2017, Article in monograph or in proceedings (Research Network 28 (Society and Sport) at the European Sociological Association Congres (ESA2017))In this study, we investigated changes in and differences between the sport participation of individuals during the transition to adulthood, and the role of major life events that mark this transition. We employ a neo-Weberian theoretical framework related to changes in temporal and social resources to explain how life events marking the more adult statuses of individuals in the transition to adulthood, like leaving fulltime education, beginning to work, engaging in an intimate relationship, formalising a relationship through cohabitation or marriage and becoming a parent affect (1) the number of sports practised by an individual, (2) the frequency of sport participation, and (3) the probability of switching from practising sport (mostly) in a club setting to practising sport in other (non-)organisational settings, or to not practise sport at all. With recent panel data (2009 and 2013) from the Netherlands Longitudinal Lifecourse Study (NELLS) on 2798 individuals, we were able to distinguish between-differences of respondents, from within-developments in respondent’s life courses, and deal with issues of causality and the timing of the events. Our analyses indicate, firstly, that the number of sports practised by an individual and his/her sport frequency decrease when he/she starts cohabiting or gets married, and when he/she becomes a parent. Secondly, individuals with adult educational, civil/marital and parenthood statuses participate in less sports and with a lower frequency than individuals with adolescent statuses. Thirdly, the likelihood of switching from practising sport in a club setting to practising sport in a light setting or to not practising sport at all, is affected by (changes in) an individual’s status within the employment, relationship and civil/marital domain.
2008, Article in monograph or in proceedings (AmI-08, pp. 58-74)This paper presents the results of a study on how elderly people perceive an intelligent system, embedded in their home, which should enable them to live independently longer. Users of a motion sensor system were interviewed about their experiences. A sensor system that autonomously works as well as a manipulated version was studied. The manipulation contained a touch screen that informed the users if the gathered information was correct before sending it to caregivers, so more control over personal information was provided. To test the use intention of the motion sensor system Spiekermann’s Ubiquitous Computing Acceptance Model of was used. This study shows that people, who perceive more control over their wellbeing, show more use intention. And that the subjective norm influences their acceptance. This study shows that acceptance models for Ambient Intelligence application in care situations need to be developed.
2020, Article in monograph or in proceedings (42nd ESPEN Virtual Congress - Online, pp. 667)Rationale: Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) supplementation is a promising therapy for cancer-relatedmalnutrition, which affects 20-70% of patients with cancer1,2. This systematic review aimed to examine the effects of oralomega-3 PUFA supplementation on muscle maintenance and quality of life in patients with cancer.
Methods: Randomised controlled trials in cancer patients aged >18 years were retrieved from 5 electronic databases;MEDLINE (via PubMed), EMBASE, CENTRAL, CINAHL (via EBSCOhost), and Web of Science, from database inceptionuntil 31st of December 2019. Trials supplementing ≥600 mg/d omega-3 PUFA (oral capsules, pure fish oil or oralnutritional supplements) or a control intervention for ≥3 weeks were included. Meta-analyses were performed in RevManto determine the mean differences (MD) in muscle mass and quality of life between omega-3 PUFA and control groupswith 95% confidence intervals (CI) and I2 for heterogeneity.
Results: We included 33 studies in patients with various types of cancers and degrees of malnutrition. The Cochrane riskof bias tool graded most trials as ‘unclear’ or ‘high’ risk of bias. Meta-analyses showed oral omega-3 PUFA supplementsimproved physical functioning (MD: 6.33; 95% CI: 0.32, 12.34, p=0.04; I2=0%) and potentially reduced fatigue (MD: -6.21;95% CI: -13.473, 1.05, p=0.09; I2=14%). However, there was no significant effect of omega-3 PUFA supplements on muscle mass, global health status, emotional functioning and symptoms (nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite anddiarrhoea).
Conclusion: This review provides evidence for the benefits of oral omega-3 PUFA supplementation on quality of life butnot on muscle maintenance in patients with cancer. Well-designed large-scale randomised controlled trials inhomogenous patient cohorts are required to confirm these findings.
2020, Article in monograph or in proceedings (Project: Hospital’s IT infrastructure capability and digital capabilities, pp. 233-244)In the Netherlands demands on IT support in healthcare organizations are increasing. New visions on healthcare focus on patient-centered healthcare, where mutual consultation among healthcare professionals in the network becomes a standard process. Recent governmental regulations prescribe that patients must be able to access personal health records. IT flexibility is needed to allow organizations to meet new demands. In this study, we focus on Conceptual Independence (CI) be-cause CI, as a design principle, can improve the adaptability of Information Systems (IS). Software with CI operates on flexible data models that are independent of the CI based application. Therefore, it is claimed that a standalone IS becomes more flexible with CI. We extend the claim by demonstrating that CI affects the flexibility of the entire IT infrastructure. We investigate which dimensions of IT flexibility are responsible for the improvement. Multi-case study research has been performed following a mixed-methods approach in 10 mental healthcare organizations. Five have implemented openEHR, a proxy for CI, and five have not. Data has been collected with a questionnaire of IT infrastructure flexibility and semi-structured interviews. The data synthesis shows a positive effect of CI on IT flexibility, as CI increases the adaptability of IS, transparency and standardization of the IT infrastructure.

2009, Article in monograph or in proceedings (Proceedings of the 14th International Symposium on Logistics (14th ISL))This conceptual paper wants to emphasis the use of the concept of sustainability within logistics and especially transportation. While working on a new tool to help companies develop sustainable European networks, we discovered that we want to use a specific concept of sustainability: People, planet and profit.

2009, Article in monograph or in proceedings (Cinet 209)In this paper we will identify the contract dimensions of alliance contracts directed at joint development of new products or services. We will determine to what extent these contract dimensions are adaptable to future needs and insights. We will also provide insight into the contingency of these adjustable contract dimensions upon competence trust, the build-up of alliance experience and cooperation intensity. The results demonstrate that the adaptability of the risk and revenue distribution lags behind the adjustability of other critical contract dimensions like the scope definition, determining the input of assets and the anticipated efforts of alliance partners. This contrast in adaptability can result in an early demise of alliances. On the other hand there is evidence that alliances create such a dependency that alliances, especially those directed at joint development, tend to create a lock-in or prisoner dilemma.
2010, Article in monograph or in proceedings (Cinet 2010)Confronting environmental sustainability issues requires firms to both enhance traditional operational practices and introduce new, innovative ones. There are opportunities to enter emergent markets for products and services supporting the sustainability agenda. It is anticipated that these circumstances will more frequently involve innovative firms in collaborations with other organizations and stakeholders. In 2009 three Dutch, one Australian and one Swedish University conceived a project to work with about twenty industry partners to facilitate learning about collaborative environmental innovation practices that may be new to these partners. In this paper we consider a number of tools to be used in stimulating learning about such practices and embedding that learning in ongoing enterprise activities.

2013, Article in monograph or in proceedings (4th EMES International Research Conference on Social Enterprise)Social entrepreneurship is currently at an early stage of knowledge development, both on the European Continent, as well as internationally. To a large extent, studies originate from theory, are based on small-scale individual case studies or have identified social entrepreneurship based on an incomplete definition.

the current BNR app, which offers users a more personalized news radio experience. It does so by automatically fragmenting shows to offer our users more targeted and focused fragments of audio, not full shows. We employ audio segmentation and audio topic- tagging techniques to achieve this, which we describe in this paper. In its present form, users can subscribe to tags to get appropriate suggestions of relevant radio fragments. In the future we would like to improve the app’s personalization, by using information of the user’s interaction with the app.
2018, Article in monograph or in proceedings (The algorithmic personalization and news (apen18) workshop at icwsm '18)FD Mediagroep (FDMG1 ) is the leading information provider in the financial economic domain in the Netherlands. FDMG operates “Het Financieele Dagblad” (FD) a daily finan- cial newspaper, similar to the Financial Times. In addition, FDMG operates the daily all-news radio station “Business News Radio” (BNR). As we have a wide variety of users with various backgrounds and interests, we believe that digital me- dia (both news articles and radio) should be personalized to match the interests of a particular customer. We are therefore working on personalization of FDMG’s digital media:
• Personalized news: Recommendations and personalized summaries of news articles that match the reading pref- erences and interests of our readers
• Personalized radio: A non-linear radio experience with ra- dio snippets that match the listener’s interests
In both personalized news and personalized radio we are looking not only at introducing recommender systems but also at personalized ways to present the information using automated summarization (news) and audio segmentation (ra- dio) methods
2009, Article in monograph or in proceedings (EVS24)At HAN University research has been started into the development of a PEM fuel cell hybrid power train to
be used in an automated guided vehicle. For this purpose a test facility is used with the possibility to test all
important functional aspects of a PEM fuel cell hybrid power train. In this paper the first experimental
results of the testing of the power train are presented, driving a drive cycle designed especially for this
automated guided vehicle. Experimental results are compared to results for this specific drive cycle from
the simulation of the power train with the QSS-toolbox, using a simple battery model of our specific energy
storage situation. Further some recommendations for improvement of the test facility are given, resulting
from restrictions encountered during the experiments.
2012, Article in monograph or in proceedings ()During the previous HVTT conference in Melbourne, results have been presented of a project FORWARD, including eleven different trailer manufacturers, involving testing and modeling activities to establish a practical basis for realistic fatigue assessment as a step towards an improved light-weight trailer design. The present paper describes the next step as part of the follow-up project LIFE (LIfetime Fatique Enhancement), starting with the model-based assessment of a realistic loading history for a semi-trailer. Representative loading conditions in this history, being derived from three weeks of field testing, are then used in Finite Element analyses to estimate fatigue life at a critical high loaded welded connection in the aluminum
trailer chassis. Results are discussed with respect to the order of different loading cycles (Palmgren-Miner number, based on fatigue tests), 3D loading at the weld, the varying weld quality, and the impact of bonded connections in the trailer. These ‘lessons learned’ are interpreted, to result in improved general guidelines in light-weight trailer design.
