2013, Article / Letter to editor (Journal of Oral Rehabilitation, vol. 40, iss. 5, (2013), pp. 336-347)The aim of this study was to develop the Mastication Observation and Evaluation instrument for observing and assessing the chewing ability of children eating solid and lumpy foods. This study describes the process of item definition and item selection and reports the content validity, reproducibility and consistency of the instrument. In the developmental phase, 15 experienced speech therapists assessed item relevance and descriptions over three Delphi rounds. Potential items were selected based on the results from a literature review. At the initial Delphi round, 17 potential items were included. After three Delphi rounds, 14 items that regarded as providing distinctive value in assessment of mastication (consensus >75%) were included in the Mastication Observation and Evaluation instrument. To test item reproducibility and consistency, two experts and five students evaluated video recordings of 20 children (10 children with cerebral palsy aged 29-65 months and 10 healthy children aged 11-42 months) eating bread and a biscuit. Reproducibility was estimated by means of the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). With the exception of one item concerning chewing duration, all items showed good to excellent intra-observer agreement (ICC students: 0.73-1.0). With the exception of chewing duration and number of swallows, inter-observer agreement was fair to excellent for all items (ICC experts: 0.68-1.0 and ICC students: 0.42-1.0). Results indicate that this tool is a feasible instrument and could be used in clinical practice after further research is completed on the reliability of the tool.
2012, Article / Letter to editor (Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business, vol. 17, iss. 1, (2012), pp. 27-43)The contribution of purchasing to the development and growth of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the overall performance of supply chain has been neither rigorously examined nor empirically substantiated. This paper provides empirical evidence on how purchasing variables (relationship, product quality and quantity, and price) contribute to the development and growth of SMEs in Tanzania. In this study, it was found that poor relationships between suppliers and SMEs and low quality of products sold by SMEs affect the provision of service to customers and lead to poor development and growth of SMEs while high prices of products and low quantity of goods have no direct effect. Conclusions drawn include: SMEs can improve the supplier relationship, e.g., by finding alternative product sources at low prices but not at the expense of quality, and by ordering the products from suppliers on time to avoid late delivery and stock depletion.
2009, Article / Letter to editor (Assessment and Evaluation in Higher Education, vol. 35, iss. 1, (2009), pp. 55-70)In an effort to gain better understanding of the assessment of prior informal and non-formal learning, this article explores assessors’ approaches to portfolio assessment. Through this portfolio assessment, candidates had requested exemptions from specific courses within an educational programme or admission to the programme based on their prior learning. The assessors judged the portfolios according to set rating criteria, and subsequently discussed their approaches. Their decision-making processes, perception of portfolio use in the Assessment of Prior Learning (APL), deciding factors in portfolio assessment and use of the rating criteria were key elements in this discussion. The results show that they do use the rating criteria as an indicator in decision-making, but have mixed perceptions regarding the fairness of APL portfolio assessment. They perceive the portfolio evidence in combination with sound argumentation as the deciding elements in portfolio assessment.
2014, Article / Letter to editor (Accountancynieuws, vol. september, iss.
2022, Article / Letter to editor (Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism, vol. 47, iss. 5, (2022), pp. 547-554)We aimed to assess the association between gastrointestinal (GI) injury, complaints, and food intake in 60-km ultramarathon runners. Thirty-three ultramarathon runners provided pre- and post-race blood samples for assessment of GI injury by intestinal fatty-acid binding protein (I-FABP), and inflammatory response by interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and C-reactive protein (CRP). GI complaints and nutritional intake were reported by a post-race questionnaire. GI complaints were reported by 73% of the runners, of which 20% reported 1 or 2 severe complaints. IL-6, IL8, TNF-α, and CRP increased significantly from pre- to post-race (P < 0.001 for all biomarkers), while I-FABP did not (1375 [IQR: 1264-2073] to 1726 [IQR: 985-3287] pg/mL; P = 0.330). The 'GI complaints score', as the integral of the number and severity of GI complaints, did not correlate with ΔI-FABP (rs: -0.050, P = 0.790) or energy intake (rs: 0.211, P = 0.260). However, there was a significant negative correlation between energy intake and ΔI-FABP (rs: -0.388, P = 0.031). In conclusion, GI complaints were neither associated with food intake nor GI injury as assessed by plasma I-FABP response. Energy intake, however, was inversely related to the I-FABP response to exercise. This finding suggests that substantial energy intakes during exercise may prevent exercise-induced GI injury as assessed by the I-FABP response. Novelty: No association between gastrointestinal complaints and gastrointestinal injury (I-FABP response) or food intake was present. There was an inverse correlation between energy intake and plasma I-FABP response, suggesting that higher energy intakes may prevent gastrointestinal injury as assessed by the I-FABP response.
2022, Article / Letter to editor (Clinical nutrition ESPEN, vol. 49, (2022), pp. 163-171)BACKGROUND & AIM: Malnutrition adversely influences a broad range of physical and psychological symptoms. Although polypharmacy is often mentioned to be associated with malnutrition, especially in older people it is unclear to what extent. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the extent of the association between polypharmacy and malnutrition in older people. METHODS: The methodology followed the guidelines of the Cochrane Collaboration. Literature search was performed in PubMed, CINAHL and Embase. The population of interest for this systematic review were people of 65 years and older with polypharmacy. Because there is ambiguity with regard to the actual definition of malnutrition and polypharmacy, in this systematic review all articles describing malnutrition prevalence rates were included, regardless of the criteria used. Both observational and intervention studies were screened for eligibility. Selection and quality assessment of the included full text studies was assessed by two reviewers independently. A level of evidence and methodological quality score was adjudged to each article based on this assessment. RESULTS: A total of 3126 studies were retrieved by the literature search, of which seven studies were included in this systematic review. There was considerable variation in the definition of polypharmacy between studies. Two studies defined polypharmacy as the use of five or more drugs, two studies as the use of six or more drugs, two studies provided a mean and standard deviation that corresponded to the minimum of five drugs, and one study distinguished between polypharmacy (five or more drugs) and excessive polypharmacy (ten or more drugs). However, all studies showed a statistically significant association between (the risk) of becoming malnourished and polypharmacy regardless the instrument or criterion used to define risk of malnutrition. Studies presented the associations respectively as OR ≥ 1.177, p-value ≤ 0.028, β ≥ -0.62 and r  ≥ -0.31. CONCLUSION: This review demonstrated a statistically significant association between polypharmacy and malnutrition. Further research is required to determine the magnitude of the effect by increased number of drugs in combination with the type of drugs, on the risk of malnutrition.

2011, Article / Letter to editor (International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, vol. 27, iss. 7, (2011), pp. 742-748)Implementing evidence-based guidelines is not a simple task. This study aimed to define barriers to and facilitators for implementing the proven and effective Community Occupational Therapy in Dementia (COTiD) guideline for older people with dementia and their carers. The qualitative method we used was the grounded theory. We collected data from focus group interviews with 17 occupational therapists (OTs) and telephone interviews with 10 physicians and 4 managers. We analysed the data with the constant comparative method by identifying codes, categories, and main themes. The main themes in barriers that OTs encountered were that they did not feel competent in treating older people with dementia at home according to the guideline; they had difficulties prioritising in this complex treatment, both for the client and themselves; and they were unsure about the minimal criteria for guideline adherence. The intensity of this programme was the main barrier. The barriers that confronted physicians and managers were lack of knowledge about occupational therapy and its reimbursement and lack of available trained OTs. For the OTs, the guidelines content and focus, evidence, and external support facilitated the use of the guideline. For physicians and managers, the guidelines evidence base and its benefits for clients and carers were the main facilitators. This study generates knowledge for applying innovations in health care settings. Improvement of the OTs knowledge and self-confidence is needed for using the guideline. We expect that more competent OTs will motivate their physicians and managers to use this successful COTiD intervention

2020, Article / Letter to editor (European Journal of Teacher Education, vol. 43, iss. 2, (2020), pp. 243-257)Teacher leadership is often connected to experienced teachers as it is assumed that a certain level of knowledge and experience is needed. Informal teacher leadership, however, can also be expected from beginning teachers. The aim of this study is to study beginning teachers? opportunities for enacting leadership. Twelve pairs, consisting of one school management staff member (e.g. principal, administrators, head of departments) and one beginning teacher, were interviewed. For the analyses, three codes describing levels of leadership (witness, participation, ownership) were used to label the situations reported by the novices and staff members in which they experienced and observed leadership. The findings of this study show that it is possible for beginning teachers to enact leadership roles. They do, however, need to develop knowledge and skills for this purpose. To optimise these leadership competencies, teacher education programmes could consider including this more explicitly in their curriculum.

2011, Article / Letter to editor (Wetenschappelijk Tijdschrift voor Ergotherapie, vol. 2011, iss.
2022, Article / Letter to editor (J Clin Med, vol. 11, iss. 3, (2022))OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of behavioural interventions in people with oropharyngeal dysphagia. METHODS: Systematic literature searches were conducted to retrieve randomized controlled trials in four different databases (CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, and PubMed). The methodological quality of eligible articles was assessed using the Revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomised trials (RoB 2), after which meta-analyses were performed using a random-effects model. RESULTS: A total of 37 studies were included. Overall, a significant, large pre-post interventions effect size was found. To compare different types of interventions, all behavioural interventions and conventional dysphagia treatment comparison groups were categorised into compensatory, rehabilitative, and combined compensatory and rehabilitative interventions. Overall, significant treatment effects were identified favouring behavioural interventions. In particular, large effect sizes were found when comparing rehabilitative interventions with no dysphagia treatment, and combined interventions with compensatory conventional dysphagia treatment. When comparing selected interventions versus conventional dysphagia treatment, significant, large effect sizes were found in favour of Shaker exercise, chin tuck against resistance exercise, and expiratory muscle strength training. CONCLUSIONS: Behavioural interventions show promising effects in people with oropharyngeal dysphagia. However, due to high heterogeneity between studies, generalisations of meta-analyses need to be interpreted with care.
2017, Article / Letter to editor (Psychology of Music, vol. 46, iss. 4, (2017), pp. 568-587)Music as an effective self-regulative tool for emotions and behavioural adaptation for adolescents might enhance emotion-related skills when applied as a therapeutic school intervention. This study investigated Rap & Sing Music Therapy in a school-based programme, to support self-regulative abilities for well-being. One-hundred-and-ninety adolescents in grade 8 of a public school in the Netherlands were randomly assigned to an experimental group involving Rap & Sing Music Therapy or a control group. Both interventions were applied to six classes once a week during four months. Measurements at baseline and again after four months provided outcome data of adolescents’ psychological well-being, self-description, self-esteem and emotion regulation. Significant differences between groups on the SDQ teacher test indicated a stabilized Rap & Sing Music Therapy group, as opposed to increased problems in the control group (p = .001; ?p2 = .132). Total problem scores of all tests indicated significant improvements in the Rap & Sing Music Therapy group. The RCT results imply overall benefits of Rap & Sing Music Therapy in a school setting. There were improved effects on all measures – as they are in line with school interventions of motivational engagement in behavioural, emotional and social themes – a promising result.
2012, Part of book or chapter of book (, pp. 43-60)This paper presents the findings of a research project on the competencies which supply chain managers in the fashion industry need to rely on, in order to perform successfully in their job. In this research project 21 supply chain managers in the fashion industry in the Netherlands have been interviewed. Together they are responsible for the distribution of goods towards 1,550 owned/franchised outlets and towards about 6,600 re-seller outlets, which is about half of all fashion retail outlets in the Netherlands. The results give a clear picture of the competencies required of a logistics and supply chain manager in the Dutch fashion industry and point to how these competencies have been acquired in practice.
