This paper describes a case in where the 1:10:100 design approach is used in a social sciences project and explores the mutual learning that took place. It discusses the added value of using design artefacts (prototypes) in the process and to what level these can be seen as boundary objects. Among the project partners there are two teams of social scientists (German and Dutch) that were collecting data and worked with abstract thinking processes and a design team who concerned about usability and intervened with design tools. The prototypes in the project are reviewed as boundary objects on three levels: to create common ground, to sharpen focus and as window into the future. The learning mechanisms that occurred (reflection and transformation) shifted the focus in the project from mining data on behalf of a community database towards a tool in which enterprising villagers can show their qualities and entrepreneurship.

From flexibility human resource management to employee engagement and perceived job performance across the lifespan: A multisample study

Based on work adjustment theory and AMO theory, it was predicted that availability and use of flexibility HRM would be positively related to employee engagement, as well as higher job performance. Moreover, we postulated different hypotheses regarding the role of employee age. While generation theory predicts that younger generations would react more strongly to flexibility HRM in relation to engagement, selection, optimization, and compensation theory of ageing predicts that older workers respond more strongly in relation to job performance. A longitudinal study among US employees and a study among employees in 11 countries across the world showed that engagement mediated the relationships between availability of flexibility HRM and job performance. Moreover, we found partial support for the moderating role of age in the relations of flexibility HRM with the outcomes: Flexibility HRM was important for younger workers to enhance engagement, while for older workers, it enhanced their job performance. The study shows that the effectiveness of flexibility HRM depends upon employee age and the type of outcome involved, and consequently, theory on flexibility at work should take the age of employees into account.

In order to be able to test all important functional aspects of a fuel cell hybrid drive train, the Automotive Institute of the HAN University has decided to realize a stationary test facility, comprising an 8 kW PEM stack and a 185 [Ah] 48 [V] NiCd battery, which is connected to an asynchronous motor, which is loaded by an eddy current brake. The objective of the test facility is to provide an efficient and accessible test platform for the development of fuel cell hybrid drive trains and subsystems. This paper describes the HAN fuel cell hybrid drive train test facility and some of the experimental results that have been obtained during the process that was needed to make the facility operational.

2014, Article / Letter to editor (Acta Oncologica, vol. 54, iss. 3, (2014), pp. 1-11)To capture the views of different health care providers involved in the treatment of patients with lymphoedema from various countries around the world on the functioning of lymphoedema patients and the factors influencing functioning of these patients using the international classification of functioning, disability and health (ICF). A worldwide e-mail survey with questions based on components of the ICF. In total, 142 health professionals from seven different health professions and 20 different countries answered the questions. The aspects of functioning that were named by the health professionals could be linked to 359 different ICF categories. Of these categories, 109 belonged to body functions (30.4%), 55 to body structures (15.3%), 121 to activities and participation (33.7%) and 74 to environmental factors (20.6%). Overall, the most mentioned items were health services, systems and policies, immunological system functions, looking after ones health, products and technology for personal use in daily life and dressing. The ICF provided a valuable reference for identifying concepts in statements from international health care professionals experienced in the treatment of lymphoedema patients. The results of this research will be used in the development of ICF core sets for lymphoedema.

2017, Article / Letter to editor (Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy, vol. 25, iss. 9, (2017), pp. 2904-2913)PURPOSE: In this prospective study, the changes in kinetics and kinematics of gait and clinical outcomes after a varus osteotomy (tibial, femoral or double osteotomy) in patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee and a valgus leg alignment were analysed and compared to healthy subjects. METHODS: Twelve patients and ten healthy controls were included. Both kinetics and kinematics of gait and clinical and radiographic outcomes were evaluated. RESULTS: The knee adduction moment increased significantly postoperatively (p < 0.05) and almost similar to the control group. Patients showed less knee and hip flexion/extension motion and moment during gait pre- and postoperatively compared to the controls. A significant improvement was found in WOMAC [80.8 (SD 16.1), p = 0.000], KOS [74.9 (SD 14.7), p = 0.018], OKS [21.2 (SD 7.5), p = 0.000] and VAS-pain [32.9 (SD 20.9), p = 0.003] in all patients irrespective of the osteotomy technique used. The radiographic measurements showed a mean hip knee ankle (HKA) angle correction of 10.4° (95 % CI 6.4°-14.4°). CONCLUSION: In patients with knee OA combined with a valgus leg alignment, the varus-producing osteotomy is a successful treatment. Postoperatively, the patients showed kinetics and kinematics of gait similar as that of a healthy control group. A significant increase in the knee adduction moment during stance phase was found, which was related to the degree of correction. The HKA angle towards zero degrees caused a medial shift in the dynamic knee loading. The medial shift will optimally restore cartilage loading forces and knee ligament balance and reduces progression of OA or the risk of OA. A significant improvement in all clinical outcomes was also found. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: III.

Game changers. The impact of major life events on sport participation

2022, Dissertation The social significance of sport has surged in recent decades, and promoting sport participation have become a priority in governmental policies and campaigns related to sports, physical activity and health. Nonetheless, sport participation is dynamic and generally decreases during the life course. This dissertation investigated to what extend major life events play a role in this. Particularly, it examined sport participation during the transition into adulthood and the impact of life events that mark this transition. The research findings show that leaving full-time education, beginning work, moving out to live on your own, engaging in a relationship, starting to cohabit or getting married, and becoming a parent affect the likelihood of starting and stopping a sport, the sport participation frequency and setting, and/or the number of sports practiced. So, these major live events are game changers, which sports providers and policy makers, among others, should take into account when promoting “lifelong sport participation” and “sports for all”.

En hoe zorg je er voor dat die communicatie succesvol verloopt? Waar moet je allemaal op letten als je met een ander communiceert? En wat betekent dat voor de kennis en vaardigheden die je als professional in je rugzak moet hebben? Om deze vragen te kunnen beantwoorden staan we in dit artikel eerst stil bij het belang om goed te kunnen communiceren (1). Vervolgens belichten we het communicatieproces van (aankomende) professionals en docenten in het bijzonder (2). We zoomen in op een aantal facetten – dat bijdraagt aan een succesvol verloop van dat communicatieproces (3, 4 en 5). Vervolgens geven we aan wat dat communicatieproces betekent voor de communicatieve competentie van een professional (6). Onze kijk op communiceren is grotendeels gebaseerd op inzichten uit de communicatiekunde, taalbeheersing en taalwetenschap. Om de theorie met de praktijk te verbinden is de tekst gelardeerd met praktijkvoorbeelden uit projecten van het lectoraat waarin die theoretische inzichten een rol spelen. De praktijkvoorbeelden staan in aparte kaders in de tekst.

2014, Dissertation Bij het opleiden van nieuwe leraren wordt steeds meer belang toegekend aan het leren in de beroepscontext. Met het Opleiden in de School (OidS) zijn grote stappen gezet om in samenwerkingsverbanden tussen scholen en lerarenopleidingen werkplekleren als onderdeel van de opleiding te organiseren. Het blijkt een veelbelovend, maar eveneens complex onderdeel van de opleiding. Om de kwaliteit hiervan te borgen wordt onder meer ingezet op het organiseren van begeleiding van de leraar in opleiding. In de afgelopen jaren hebben scholen en lerarenopleidingen afspraken gemaakt over het organiseren van begeleiding. Begeleiding kan echter op veel manieren worden uitgewerkt en ingezet, waarbij het niet duidelijk is welke strategie leidt tot welke opbrengst (Hobson et al., 2009). Het onderzoek in dit proefschrift heeft als doel meer zicht te krijgen op de praktijk van de begeleiding van het werkplekleren. Centraal staat de vraag hoe het georganiseerde begeleiden vorm krijgt bij het OidS in de context van de initiële opleiding van leraren voor het voortgezet onderwijs.
