2015, Article / Letter to editor (Scientific Reports, vol. 5, (2015), pp. 17896)Green tea, particularly epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), may affect body weight and composition, possibly by enhancing fat oxidation. The aim of this double-blind, randomized placebo-controlled cross-over study was to investigate whether 3-day supplementation with EGCG (282 mg/day) stimulates fat oxidation and lipolysis in 24 overweight subjects (age = 30 ± 2 yrs, BMI = 27.7 ± 0.3 kg/m(2)). Energy expenditure, substrate metabolism and circulating metabolites were determined during fasting and postprandial conditions. After 6 h, a fat biopsy was collected to examine gene expression. In 12 subjects, skeletal muscle glycerol, glucose and lactate concentrations were determined using microdialysis. EGCG-supplementation did not alter energy expenditure and substrate oxidation compared to placebo. Although EGCG reduced postprandial circulating glycerol concentrations (P = 0.015), no difference in skeletal muscle lipolysis was observed. Fasting (P = 0.001) and postprandial (P = 0.003) skeletal muscle lactate concentrations were reduced after EGCG-supplementation compared to placebo, despite similar tissue blood flow. Adipose tissue leptin (P = 0.05) and FAT/CD36 expression (P = 0.08) were increased after EGCG compared to placebo. In conclusion, 3-day EGCG-supplementation decreased postprandial plasma glycerol concentrations, but had no significant effects on skeletal muscle lipolysis and whole-body fat oxidation in overweight individuals. Furthermore, EGCG decreased skeletal muscle lactate concentrations, which suggest a shift towards a more oxidative muscle phenotype.
2008, Article / Letter to editor (LogForum, vol. 2008, iss. 1, (2008))Educating students to become a logistics professional, requires a certain set of competences to be attained. This study investigates which competences are required in logistics business practise, and whether a differentiation may be noticed in the actual profiles of logistics professional. It shows that educational institutions could fine tune training their students according to the required abilities, skills and attitudes
2016, Dissertation This dissertation addresses the alignment of learning space with higher education learning and teaching. Significant changes in higher education the past decades, such as increased information and communication technology (ICT) and new learning theories have resulted in the dilemma whether higher education institutions can facilitate tomorrow’s learning and teaching in today’s or even yesterday’s school buildings. In practice, this results in the managerial question: ‘How can higher education institutions align the physical learning environment with the developments in learning and teaching?’.

2013, Article / Letter to editor (European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology, vol. 22, iss. 3, (2013), pp. 279-292)The current study investigated the influence of age-related constructs on the psychological contract and its relationships with continuance and normative commitment. It was proposed that as people age, their future time perspective (FTP) decreases. Consequently, it was expected that contract fulfilment would be positively related to continuance commitment for workers with short FTP, while it would be positively related to normative commitment for workers with long FTP. Conversely, it was argued that, with age, workers’ perceived work-related expertise increases, resulting in stronger reactions to obligation fulfilment on normative commitment. A study among 334 employees showed that FTP and work-related expertise indeed moderated the relationships between contract fulfilment and organizational commitment. The results showed that the influence of age on the relations between contract fulfilment with outcomes is dependent upon FTP and occupational expertise. The study shows the value of a lifespan perspective on psychological contracts and their relations with organizational commitment.
2021, Article / Letter to editor (Quality & Quantity, (2021))In educational, social or organizational studies, open-ended concept maps are used as an instrument to collect data about and analyze individuals’ conceptual knowledge. Openended concept map studies devoted to knowledge and learning apply a variety of methods of analysis. This literature review systematically summarizes the various ways in which open-ended concept maps have been applied in previous studies of knowledge and learning. This paper describes three major aspects of these studies: what methods of analysis were used, what concept map characteristics were considered, and what conclusions about individuals’ knowledge or understanding were drawn. Twenty-fve studies that used open-ended concept maps as a research instrument were found eligible for inclusion. In addition, the paper examines associations between the three aspects of the studies and provides guidelines for methodological coherence in the process of such analysis. This review underscores the importance of expatiating on choices made concerning these aspects. The transparency provided by this method of working will contribute to the imitable application of open-ended concept maps as a research tool and foster more informed choices in future open-ended concept map studies.”
2013, Article / Letter to editor (Applied Psychology: an International Review, vol. 62, iss. 1, (2013), pp. 157-181)The current paper investigated age-related differences in the relations of psychological contract breach with work outcomes over time. Based on affective events theory, we expected job satisfaction to mediate the longitudinal relationship of contract breach with changes in job performance. Moreover, based on socio-emotional selectivity theory, it was predicted that reactions to contract breach on job satisfaction and job performance would be stronger among younger workers than older workers. This two-wave panel study among 240 employees investigated interactions of age with psychological contract breach in relation to changes in job satisfaction and job performance over time. Moderated structural equation modeling showed that job satisfaction partially mediated the longitudinal relationships between contract breach and job performance. Moreover, the analyses supported socio-emotional selectivity theory; older workers reacted less intensely to psychological contract breach towards job satisfaction and job performance, indicating a general decreased responsiveness of older workers towards the psychological contract. It is concluded that age plays an important role in how contract breaches relate to changes in work outcomes over time.
2016, Article / Letter to editor (Scandinavian Journal of Trauma, Resuscitation and Emergency Medicine, vol. 24, (2016))Background: In pre-hospital Emergency Medical Services (EMS) more research is needed to direct and underpin care delivery and inform policy. To target future research efforts, this study aimed to determine future research priorities with representatives of the EMS field. Methods: A four-round online Delphi survey was used to discuss different viewpoints and reach consensus on research priorities. A multidisciplinary panel of experts was recruited in the field of pre-hospital EMS and adjoining (scientific) professional organisations (n = 62). 48 research topics were presented in Delphi I, and the panel was asked to rate their importance on a 5-point scale. In Delphi II and III the panel selected their priority research topics, and arguments why and suggestions for research questions were collected and reported back. In Delphi IV appropriateness of the remaining topics and agreement within the expert panel was taken into account to make up the final list of research priorities. Results: The response on the Delphi-survey was high: 95 % (n = 59; Delphi I); 97 % (n = 60, Delphi II); 94 % (n = 58, Delphi III); 97 % (n = 60, Delphi IV). The panel reduced the number of research topics from 48 topics in Delphi I to 12 topics in Delphi III. A variety of arguments and suggestions for research questions were collected, giving insight in reasons why research on these topics in the near future is needed. Delphi IV showed an adequate level of agreement with respect to the 12 presented research topics. The following 9 topics were rated as appropriate for the national pre-hospital EMS research agenda: Non-conveyance to the hospital (ranked highest); Performance measures for quality of care; Hand over/registration/exchange of patient data; Care and task substitution; Triage; Assessment of acute neurologic signs & symptoms; Protocols and protocol adherence; Immobilisation; and Open/secure airway. Discussions: The research priorities identified in our study resemble those in other studies. However, the topic 'non-conveyance to the hospital' was determined as a priority in this study but not in other studies. Conclusions: The national pre-hospital EMS research agenda can focus future research efforts to improve the evidence base and clinical practice of pre-hospital emergency medical services. Dissemination and implementation of the research agenda deserves careful attention.
2015, Article / Letter to editor (PLoS One, vol. 10, iss. 7, (2015), pp. e0133691)The identification of translation initiation sites (TISs) constitutes an important aspect of sequence-based genome analysis. An erroneous TIS annotation can impair the identification of regulatory elements and N-terminal signal peptides, and also may flaw the determination of descent, for any particular gene. We have formulated a reference-free method to score the TIS annotation quality. The method is based on a comparison of the observed and expected distribution of all TISs in a particular genome given prior gene-calling. We have assessed the TIS annotations for all available NCBI RefSeq microbial genomes and found that approximately 87% is of appropriate quality, whereas 13% needs substantial improvement. We have analyzed a number of factors that could affect TIS annotation quality such as GC-content, taxonomy, the fraction of genes with a Shine-Dalgarno sequence and the year of publication. The analysis showed that only the first factor has a clear effect. We have then formulated a straightforward Principle Component Analysis-based TIS identification strategy to self-organize and score potential TISs. The strategy is independent of reference data and a priori calculations. A representative set of 277 genomes was subjected to the analysis and we found a clear increase in TIS annotation quality for the genomes with a low quality score. The PCA-based annotation was also compared with annotation with the current tool of reference, Prodigal. The comparison for the model genome of Escherichia coli K12 showed that both methods supplement each other and that prediction agreement can be used as an indicator of a correct TIS annotation. Importantly, the data suggest that the addition of a PCA-based strategy to a Prodigal prediction can be used to 'flag' TIS annotations for re-evaluation and in addition can be used to evaluate a given annotation in case a Prodigal annotation is lacking.
2012, Article / Letter to editor (Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids, vol. 17, iss. 358, (2012), pp. 2308-2312)We present a novel method to achieve light trapping in thin film silicon solar cells. Unlike the commonly used surface textures, such as Asahi U-type TCO, that rely on light scattering phenomena, we employ embossed periodically arranged micro-pyramidal structures with feature sizes much larger than the wavelength of visible light. Angular resolved transmission of light through these substrates indeed showed diffraction patterns, unlike in the case of Asahi U-type substrates, which show angular resolved scattering. Single junction amorphous silicon (a-Si) solar cells made at 125 °C on the embossed structured polycarbonate (PC) substrates showed an increase in current density by 24% compared to a similar solar cell on a flat substrate. The band gap and thickness of the i-layer made by VHF PECVD are 1.9 eV and 270 nm respectively. A double p-layer (nc-Si:H/a-Si:H) was used to make proper contact with ZnO:Al TCO. Numerical modeling, called DokterDEP was performed to fit the dark and light current–voltage parameters and understand the characteristics of the cell. The output parameters from the modeling suggest that the cells have excellent built-in potential (Vbi). However, a rather high recombination voltage, Vµ, affects the FF and short circuit current density (Jsc) for the cells on Asahi as well as for the cells on PC. A rather high parallel resistance » 1 MO cm2 (obtained from the modeling) infers that there is no significant shunt leakage, which is often observed for solar cells made at low temperatures on rough substrates. An efficiency of more than 6% for a cell on PC shows enormous potential of this type of light trapping structures.

That is the question we address to in this paper. In this study we have studied what container sizes may fit in the future demands of world trade and freight flows. We have identified several trends and studied its possible impact on the sizes of the truck of the future. Two serial projects have been carried out within the framework of the HTAS-EMS research program, in which amongst others MAN, University of Technology Eindhoven, TNO and HAN University of Applied Sciences cooperate in order to determine the requirements for the truck of the future. The first two projects of this research program have been carried out in order to determine possible influences of: - packaging on the requirement of Logistic Service Providers for the next generation of trucks (project I); - the pallet as an influence on the opportunities for intermodality of transport units, within the context of EU trade with emerging economies (project II). The first research project was part of a dissertation program for the MSc program in Logistics and Supply Chain management of the University of Westminster (project I); the second, of a BBA program in Logistics of HAN University of Applied Sciences (project II).

2017, Article in monograph or in proceedings (Proceedings of ALLDATA, The 3d international conference on Big Data, Small Data, Linked Data and Open Data)In this paper, we show our vision on prescriptive analytics. Prescriptive analytics is a field of study in which the actions are determined that are required in order to achieve a particular goal. This is different from predictive analytics, where we only determine what will happen if we continue current trend. Consequently, the amount of data that needs to be taken into account is much larger, making it a relevant big data problem. We zoom in on the requirements of prescriptive analytics problems: impact, complexity, objective, constraints and data. We explain some of the challenges, such as the availability of the data, the downside of simulations, the creation of bias in the data and trust of the user. We highlight a number of application areas in which prescriptive analytics could or would not work given our requirements. Based on these application areas, we conclude that domains with a large amount of data and in which the phenomena are restricted by laws of physics or math are very applicable for prescriptive analytics. Areas in which the human or human activities play a role, future research will be required to meet the requirements and tackle the challenges. Directions of future research will be in integrating model-driven and data-driven approaches, but also privacy, ethics and legislation. Whereas predictive analytics is often already accepted in society, prescriptive analytics is still in its infancy.

2012, Article / Letter to editor (Nederlands-Vlaams Tijdschrift voor Palliatieve Zorg, vol. 2012, iss.

2016, Article in monograph or in proceedings (10th Management Control Research Conference)This paper outlines the essentials of a relational perspective and offers a review of relational accounting studies that are particularly related to strategy and strategising. The aim therefore is to review the contribution of a relational perspective in management accounting literature to the knowledge creation on the performativity of accounting as it relates to strategising. Performative accounting research shows how management accounting shifts from its traditional functionalism in the context of decision support and control towards studying practices. As such, the paper advocates a performativity turn in management accounting research. This turn is consequential for the study of the accounting-strategy nexus and future research avenues are paved.

2018, Article / Letter to editor (Journal of Social Intervention : Theory and Practice, vol. 27, iss. 6, (2018), pp. 4-23)Care farms in the Netherlands, also known as social farms, are thought of as valuable day services centres, and sometimes as residential care providers, for highly diverse and mixed groups. This article is about the features of happiness at care farms. The main question is: what is the potential for achieving happiness at care farms in the Netherlands? Psychologist Ap Dijksterhuis’ theory on the components of happiness serves as a conceptual framework. Based on a literature study examining the qualities and values of care farms, the features of happy living at care farms in the Netherlands are described and illustrated with examples from three present-day practices. The care farmers were interviewed about their ideas and methods in relation to contributing to a good and happy life for care farm participants. This ideal life is mainly accomplished by means of: the stimulation of flow experiences through (farm-based) activities, emphasizing a connection with others and with nature; and providing farm-based products and services to the surrounding community.
