2022, Article / Letter to editor (International Review of Sport and Exercise Psychology, (2022))Athletes are exposed to various psychological and physiological stressors, such as losing matches and high training loads. Understanding and improving the resilience of athletes is therefore crucial to prevent performance decrements and psychological or physical problems. In this review, resilience is conceptualized as a dynamic process of bouncing back to normal functioning following stressors. This process has been of wide interest in psychology, but also in the physiology and sports science literature (e.g. load and recovery). To improve our understanding of the process of resilience, we argue for a collaborative synthesis of knowledge from the domains of psychology, physiology, sports science, and data science. Accordingly, we propose a multidisciplinary, dynamic, and personalized research agenda on resilience. We explain how new technologies and data science applications are important future trends (1) to detect warning signals for resilience losses in (combinations of) psychological and physiological changes, and (2) to provide athletes and their coaches with personalized feedback about athletes' resilience.
2009, Article in monograph or in proceedings (Cinet 2009)Setting up strategic alliances and trying to attain the intended goals is a highrisk venture. Most research into this topic is confined to already established alliances. This research will focus on perceived performance risks by organizations considering a possible strategic venture. Following other scholars, we focus on performance risks. But unlike previous research we have made an effort to uncover the underlying dimensions of these risks. We will show that the risk perception influences the readiness towards the possible setup of a strategic alliance. Organizations with a high risk perception are less inclined to set-up a strategic alliance. Although we expected that organizations with a higher risk perception would also opt for more risk mitigation, our findings shows the opposite. The research shows that the ability to improve processes is an intermediate explaining variable. Organizations accustomed to continuous improvement and integral quality management have a lower risk perception towards the set up of strategic alliances and also show more readiness to take risk mitigation measures.
2011, Article / Letter to editor (American Journal of Respiratory Critical Care Care Medicine, vol. 184, iss. 3, (2011), pp. 340-344)Delirium is often unrecognized in ICU patients and associated with poor outcome. Screening for ICU delirium is recommended by several medical organizations to improve early diagnosis and treatment. The Confusion Assessment Method for the ICU (CAM-ICU) has high sensitivity and specificity for delirium when administered by research nurses. However, test characteristics of the CAM-ICU as performed in routine practice are unclear.

2009, Article / Letter to editor (European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, vol. 63, (2009), pp. 1161-1168)This paper evaluates the safety for humans with regard to consumption of protein hydrolysates and fractions thereof, including
bioactive peptides. The available literature on the safety of protein, protein hydrolysates, fractions thereof and free amino acids
on relevant food legislation is reviewed and evaluated. A new concept for the safety assessment of protein hydrolysates and
fractions thereof is developed. Benchmarks for the evaluation are safety of total protein intake, safety of free amino acid intake,
documented history of safe use, outcome of questionnaires in efficacy studies and safety studies.

2012, Article / Letter to editor (International Journal of Sport Psychology, vol. 2012, iss. 43, (2012), pp. 312-325)In learning and development, self-regulation can be described as the extent to which individuals are metacognitively, motivationally, and behaviourally proactive participants in their learning process (Zimmerman, 1989, 2006). We examined the relationship between self-regulation and performance level in elite (n = 159) and non-elite (n = 285) youth soccer players aged 11-17 years (mean 14.5 years, s = 1.4). The players completed a questionnaire that assessed planning, self-monitoring, evaluation, reflection, effort, and self-efficacy. A logistic regression analysis was performed (controlling for age) to determine which self-regulatory aspects were associated with players performance level (elite vs. non-elite). High scores on reflection and effort were associated with a higher level of performance. Findings suggest that elite players may be more aware of their strong and weak points as well as better able to translate this awareness into action. In addition, elite players appear to be more willing to invest effort into practice and competition. It is suggested that these better developed self-regulatory skills may translate into a more effective learning environment and ultimately result in an increased capacity for performance in elite players relative to their non-elite peers.
2012, Article in monograph or in proceedings ()During the previous HVTT conference in Melbourne, results have been presented of a project FORWARD, including eleven different trailer manufacturers, involving testing and modeling activities to establish a practical basis for realistic fatigue assessment as a step towards an improved light-weight trailer design. The present paper describes the next step as part of the follow-up project LIFE (LIfetime Fatique Enhancement), starting with the model-based assessment of a realistic loading history for a semi-trailer. Representative loading conditions in this history, being derived from three weeks of field testing, are then used in Finite Element analyses to estimate fatigue life at a critical high loaded welded connection in the aluminum
trailer chassis. Results are discussed with respect to the order of different loading cycles (Palmgren-Miner number, based on fatigue tests), 3D loading at the weld, the varying weld quality, and the impact of bonded connections in the trailer. These ‘lessons learned’ are interpreted, to result in improved general guidelines in light-weight trailer design.

2011, Article / Letter to editor (Tijdschrift voor Beleid, Politiek en Maatschappij, vol. 38, iss.

The main issue focused on the question to what extent coaching creative entrepreneurship is different from coaching ‘ordinary’ entrepreneurship. Our research at ARCCI has shown that creative people are more entrepreneurial than average, but in many cases don’t define themselves as entrepreneurs. As a consequence, many creative professionals do not manage their business as professionally as they should.
2013, Article in monograph or in proceedings (4th EMES International Research Conference on Social Enterprise)Social entrepreneurship is currently at an early stage of knowledge development, both on the European Continent, as well as internationally. To a large extent, studies originate from theory, are based on small-scale individual case studies or have identified social entrepreneurship based on an incomplete definition.
2014, Article / Letter to editor (International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business, (2014))Social entrepreneurship has been defined until now by borrowing insights from commercial, Schumpeterian entrepreneurship as well as a new way of looking at non-profit work (Peredo and McLean, 2006; Short et al., 2009). Inspired by the use of a competence perspective to define entrepreneurship (European Commission, 2005), our main purpose in this article is to apply a competence perspective to social entrepreneurship, using a multidimensional framework. We start by looking at social entrepreneurship in the context of commercial entrepreneurship research. Next, we describe the concepts of competence and entrepreneurial competence as building blocks for our view. Then we describe the research of the concept of competence for social entrepreneurship among 103 founders of social enterprises in Romania. Our main findings suggest that social entrepreneurship competence is comprised of a large spectrum of social and functional competences (rather than cognitive competence) and motivation to solve social problems.

2010, Article in monograph or in proceedings (Cinet 2010)Confronting environmental sustainability issues requires firms to both enhance traditional operational practices and introduce new, innovative ones. There are opportunities to enter emergent markets for products and services supporting the sustainability agenda. It is anticipated that these circumstances will more frequently involve innovative firms in collaborations with other organizations and stakeholders. In 2009 three Dutch, one Australian and one Swedish University conceived a project to work with about twenty industry partners to facilitate learning about collaborative environmental innovation practices that may be new to these partners. In this paper we consider a number of tools to be used in stimulating learning about such practices and embedding that learning in ongoing enterprise activities.
2009, Article in monograph or in proceedings (Cinet 209)In this paper we will identify the contract dimensions of alliance contracts directed at joint development of new products or services. We will determine to what extent these contract dimensions are adaptable to future needs and insights. We will also provide insight into the contingency of these adjustable contract dimensions upon competence trust, the build-up of alliance experience and cooperation intensity. The results demonstrate that the adaptability of the risk and revenue distribution lags behind the adjustability of other critical contract dimensions like the scope definition, determining the input of assets and the anticipated efforts of alliance partners. This contrast in adaptability can result in an early demise of alliances. On the other hand there is evidence that alliances create such a dependency that alliances, especially those directed at joint development, tend to create a lock-in or prisoner dilemma.
2011, Part of book or chapter of book (, pp. 61-70)Streekproducten staan in de belangstelling.

2012, Article / Letter to editor (Educational Studies, vol. 38, iss. 5, (2012), pp. 541-557)Instruction in peer assessment of complex task performance may cause high cognitive load, impairing learning. A stepwise instructional strategy aimed at reducing cognitive load was investigated by comparing it with a combined instructional strategy in an experiment with 128 secondary school students (mean age 14.0?years; 45.2% male) with the between-subjects factor instruction (stepwise, combined). In the stepwise condition, study tasks in Phase 1 were domain-specific and study tasks in Phase 2 had both domain-specific and peer assessment components. In the combined condition, these two components were present in all tasks in both phases. Final performance (i.e. speed and accuracy in domain-specific skills and peer assessment skills) showed no significant differences, but performance improved more from Phase 1 to Phase 2 in the stepwise condition than in the combined condition. The results suggest that, with complex study tasks, it might be beneficial to teach domain-specific skills before peer assessment skills.
2011, Part of book or chapter of book (, pp. 87-106)This paper is aimed at presenting a theoretical definition for the construct of social entrepreneurship as competence for the social economy in Europe. This definition is part of a study that was designed and developed in two phases. This paper will present only the results of the first one: the formulation of a hypothetical model for social entrepreneurship as competence in social economy. The formulation is based on specifications of the concepts of competence and social entrepreneurship, as a result of extensive literature review, and analysis of theoretical considerations. The result is a model that was constructed on the multidimensional holistic approach to competence, using Austin e. al. (2006) definition of social entrepreneurship to describe the outcomes of the competence, within the framework of the social economy in Europe. The next step will be validation of the construct with a selected target group based in Romania and the Netherlands as geographical regions within the social economy in Europe.
2010, Article / Letter to editor (B Journal of Information and Communication Technology, vol. 4, iss. 1, (2010), pp. 47-66)The use of patterns in a design process, including data modeling, is an attempt to create a better solution to a problem. We propose the use of data model patterns, organized in a pattern language, and based on Fully Communication Oriented Information Modeling (FCO-IM) as the modeling approach, as a standard to produce high quality data models. We introduce the concept of Information Grammar for Pattern (IGP) which works as a kind of template to generate FCO-IM?s Information Grammar (IG). IGP is also used to define the relations among patterns. Based on how they are abstracted, we also define 3 types of IGP. The IGP provides the basic idea for the pattern language of data model patterns based on the relations among patterns.
2012, Part of book or chapter of book (, pp. 88-102)In order to be able to age in place, Dutch elderly are being housed in Assisted Living Facilities (ALFs) for over 25 years. Here they can live independently and rely on care and services. The physical scale of ALFs ranges from 30 up to 300 residents. This paper presents the findings of a multiple case study of 24 projects regarding the impact of physical scale on group mix and social quality. The projects in the population included groups with heavier care need than presumed, leading to two contrary effects: a positive influence of vital elderly on social interaction and informal care, and a negative influence on vital elderly being confronted by the perspective of a more care de-manding future, especially due to the inclusion of people with dementia. However, due to a changing policy and housing demands of elderly, they live longer at home, leading to a higher care needing population within ALFs. These changes undermine the concept of Assisted Living Facilities.
2012, Article / Letter to editor (Educational Psychology (Abingdon, Oxfordshire), vol. 32, iss. 1, (2012), pp. 127-146)In this study the relationship between domain-specific skills and peer assessment skills as a function of task complexity is investigated. We hypothesised that peer assessment skills were superposed on domain-specific skills and will therefore suffer more when higher cognitive load is induced by increased task complexity. In a mixed factorial design with the between-subjects factor task complexity (simple, n?=?51; complex, n?=?59) and within-subjects factor task type (domain-specific, peer assessment), secondary school students studied four integrated study tasks, requiring them to learn a domain-specific skill (i.e. identifying the six steps of scientific research) and to learn how to assess a fictitious peer performing the same skill. Additionally, the students performed two domain-specific test tasks and two peer assessment test tasks. The interaction effect found on test performance supports our hypothesis. Implications for the teaching and learning of peer assessment skills are discussed.
2011, Article / Letter to editor (Netherlands Journal of Medicine, vol. 69, iss. 6, (2011), pp. 292-298)To reduce unintentional and avoidable adverse events in patients in hospitals in the Netherlands, a patient safety agency (VMS) programme was launched in 2008. Among the VMS topics, the programme optimal therapy in severe sepsis, according to the international Surviving Sepsis Campaign (SSC), aims to improve early diagnosis and treatment of sepsis to reduce sepsis mortality by 15% before the end of 2012. We analysed compliance data submitted to the international SSC database from the Netherlands and compared these data with published international SS C results. Data of 863 patients, representing 6% of the international data (n=14,209), were used for analysis. In the Netherlands, the resuscitation bundle compliance improved significantly from 7% at baseline to 27% after two years (p=0.002). Internationally, the resuscitation bundle compliance increased significantly from 11 to 31%
2022, Article / Letter to editor (Supportive Care in Cancer, (2022))Nutritional intervention is an essential part of cancer treatments. Research and clinical evidence in cancer have shown that nutritional support can reduce length of hospitalisation, diminish treatment-related toxicity, and improve nutrient intake, quality of life, and physical function. Nutritional intervention can improve outcomes and help patients in the successful completion of oncological treatments by preventing malnutrition. Malnutrition is a very common hallmark in patients with cancers. Almost one-fourth of cancer patients are at risk of dying because of the consequences of malnutrition, rather than cancer itself. Patients with digestive cancers are at higher risk of suffering malnutrition due to the gastrointestinal impairment caused by their disease. They are at high nutritional risk by definition, yet the majority of them have insufficient or null access to nutritional intervention.Inadequate resources are dedicated to implementing nutritional services in Europe. Universal access to nutritional support for digestive cancer patients is not a reality in many European countries. To change this situation, health systems should invest in qualified staff to reinforce or create nutritional teams' experts in digestive cancer treatments. We aim to share the patient community's perspective on the status and the importance of nutritional intervention. This is an advocacy manuscript presenting data on the topic and analysing the current situations and the challenges for nutrition in digestive cancers. It highlights the importance of integrative nutrition in the treatment of digestive cancers and advocates for equitable and universal access to nutritional intervention for all patients.
2022, Article / Letter to editor (JBI EVIDENCE IMPLEMENTATION, vol. 20, iss. 1, (2022), pp. 21-32)Objectives: Our aim was to incorporate body composition assessment (BCA) into dietetic department procedures using interventions tailored to previously identified barriers and enablers. Introduction: BCA is recommended as part of routine malnutrition assessment and follow-up but is not yet part of usual care. Methods: Evidence-informed strategies to overcome barriers and enablers were operationalized and delivered as three overarching interventions: upskilling (professional development strategy), modelling and reducing fear of change (Clinical Champion project), and embedding as usual practice (departmental integration). Process evaluation assessed intervention fidelity. A survey assessed utilization of BCA devices, (perceived) competency, and attitudes of clinical dietitians towards BCA before and after interventions. Results: Two of the three elements were incorporated as planned (upskilling and embedding as usual practice), with one element (modelling and reducing fear of change) modified through iterative processes. The Clinical Champion project ran for 12 rather than 6 months, and resulted in the majority of champions confident with their skills, completing BCA within their daily clinical workload and feeling BCA was useful. Pre-surveys and post-surveys within the department of 26 dietitians showed a marked reduction in most perceived barriers and improved recognition of enablers across all theoretical framework domains; with a large proportion of 'not applicable' responses given for many barriers at follow-up. Conclusion: This evidence-informed implementation strategy successfully integrated BCA into dietitians' practice and departmental processes highlighting direction for future service changes. Continual assessment of barriers and success of integration into routine workloads is required to facilitate this.

2012, Article / Letter to editor (Annals of Research in Sport and Physical Activity, vol. 2012, iss. 3, (2012))The aim of this review was to create an all-round profile of the elite artistic gymnast. Therefore, an extended literature search was performed in PubMed and PsycINFO databases. The main inclusion criteria were that the content of the article was about artistic gymnastics and that the gymnasts were of elite level and senior age. The extended literature search resulted in a total number of 22 articles, which were split up into 2 domains: the physical domain included 13 articles and the psychological domain included 9 articles. Results of the physical domain showed that the elite gymnast is small and has a low body mass, an athletic posture, a good postural control and balance and a high explosive muscular performance. Results of the psychological domain showed that the elite gymnast has a high intrinsic and achievement motivation, good concentration and confidence, strives for perfection and excellence and uses psychological strategies. These characteristics seem to be important for an elite gymnast although it is not clear yet which characteristics are most important, neither is the relation of the several characteristics to each other.
2009, Article / Letter to editor (International Journal of Nursing Studies, vol. 46, iss. 9, (2009), pp. 1256-1264)Implementation of innovations is a complex and intensive procedure in which different strategies can be successful. In nursing, strategies often focus on intrinsic motivation, competencies and attitudes of individual nurses while ignoring the social context. Since nurses often work in teams, identifying relevant team characteristics and successful team directed strategies may contribute to the implementation of innovations. The literature was searched for evidence. Few studies and little evidence were found for the relevance of team characteristics and team directed strategies in the implementation of nursing innovations. Feedback was most frequently used as a strategy. Leadership could be labeled as a team characteristic as well as a team directed strategy. Further research should be of good methodological quality and focusing on patient outcomes and time and costs invested in strategy delivery. This increases scientific knowledge on nursing implementation strategies focusing on leadership.
2007, Article / Letter to editor (Nutrafoods, vol. 6, iss. 3, (2007), pp. 5-11)Many people experience with advancing age complaints caused by degenerative changes of the cartilage in their joints, often leading to osteoarthritis (OA). Prevention and/or reduction of OA may include stimulation of the formation of new cartilage, the reduction of degenerative changes and the treatment of symptoms (pain, stiffness). On the basis of this review, it is concluded that the best opportunities for the nutritional prevention and/or treatment of OA are in the reduction of inflammation and not in the stimulation of new cartilage formation.
2012, Article / Letter to editor (The Journal of the Faculty of Economics - Economic, vol. 1, iss. 2, (2012), pp. 756-762)The current paper is aimed at identifying the social enterprises according to EMES criteria by investigating the social economy actors in Romania. As an emerging field of study, social entrepreneurship and social enterprise have captured the attention of both practitioners from Europe and North America, and in recent years on other continents. In Romania, very little research has been conducted into the field, mostly as part of academic research papers from doctoral study students or masters, both from Romania and abroad. In Europe, several studies have been conducted among member state of the European Union, to bring to light this new emerging field.. Investigations in regard to social entrepreneurship in Europe have revealed the existence of this field among social economy actors, in the form of social enterprise, namely work integration social enterprises and social cooperatives. So far, Romania has not been included in them This papers tries to fill the gap of knowledge on this phenomena, by exploring, from a European perspective, the actors of social entrepreneurship in Romania. The methodology used was an analysis of secondary data in the form of legal documents (laws), reports of the social economy sector and scholarly articles related to social entrepreneurship in Romania. The assessment instrument is the EMES set of economic and social criteria that the social enterprises need to meet. Also, parallels have been made with the entities of the same nature in the European Union. The paper concludes on the state of social enterprise in Romania, with an underline on what its and implications for their further study. As main finding, two types of organizations fit best with the EMES criteria, authorized protected units and companies set up by associations and foundations. Also, further developments are expected as Romania is preparing for a law defining the social enterprise and social economy. The main implications of this research is drawing the lines, in the current state of the social economy who are the actors that can best fit with the concept of social enterprise in Romania.
