2012, Article / Letter to editor (International Journal of Database Management Systems (IJDMS), vol. 4, iss. 6, (2012), pp. 27-48)Storing large amounts of data in an efficient way from the point of view of very fast retrieval is animportant requirement for many industries like KEMA, a company offering consulting, testing andcertification in the energy business. Because their relational database could not cope fast enough with thelarge amounts of data involved, an alternative way for data storage was proposed, called HierarchicalData Format 5 (HDF5). HDF5 is a data model, a library, and file format for storing and managing data.Four hierarchical designs for storing and retrieving the large amounts of data involved were investigated.A benchmark was carried out in order to know which hierarchical structure would perform best.Eventually, a benchmark between HDF5 and MS SQL Server was carried out. It could be shown thatHDF5 performs four (4) times better for inserting and even 200 times better for retrieving data than theMS. SQL Server.
2010, Article / Letter to editor (On the Move to Meaningful Internet Systems: OTM 2010 Workshops. Lecture Notes in Computer Science, vol. 6428, (2010), pp. 522-531)The use of patterns in a design process, including data modeling, is an attempt to create a better solution to a problem. We propose the use of data model patterns, organized in a pattern language, and based on Fully Communication Oriented Information Modeling (FCO-IM) as the modeling approach, as a standard to produce high quality data models. We introduce the concept of Information Grammar for Pattern (IGP) which works as a kind of template to generate FCO-IM?s Information Grammar (IG). IGP is also used to define the relations among patterns. Based on how they are abstracted, we also define 3 types of IGP. The IGP provides the basic idea for the pattern language of data model patterns based on the relations among patterns.

2009, Article in monograph or in proceedings (2009 International Conference on Electrical Engineering and Informatics, pp. 484-490)The article discusses a study to determine the efficacy of Fully Communication Oriented Information Modelling (FCO-IM) in generic data modelling. The researchers use two generic patterns based on the identification of an object and based on the relation between two objects to examine the FCO-IM efficacy. Study revealed that the data modelling problems found from the structures of universe of discourse (UoD) collected fact can be solved using FCO-IM.
