2014, Article / Letter to editor (Goud, vol. 11, iss.
2012, Part of book or chapter of book (, pp. 137-155)On the basis of empirical research, a competence-based model of the internationalization process of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) is developed. The model focuses on so-called International Market-Entry Core Competencies (IMECC), which are global management competences considered crucial during the formulation of a market-entry strategy. This article aims to emphasize the relevance of international managerial competencies as fundamental resources for the internationalization of SMEs and their relation with the market-entry modes.
2012, Article / Letter to editor (Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business, vol. 17, iss. 1, (2012), pp. 27-43)The contribution of purchasing to the development and growth of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the overall performance of supply chain has been neither rigorously examined nor empirically substantiated. This paper provides empirical evidence on how purchasing variables (relationship, product quality and quantity, and price) contribute to the development and growth of SMEs in Tanzania. In this study, it was found that poor relationships between suppliers and SMEs and low quality of products sold by SMEs affect the provision of service to customers and lead to poor development and growth of SMEs while high prices of products and low quantity of goods have no direct effect. Conclusions drawn include: SMEs can improve the supplier relationship, e.g., by finding alternative product sources at low prices but not at the expense of quality, and by ordering the products from suppliers on time to avoid late delivery and stock depletion.
2011, Article / Letter to editor (Best Practice Quarterly Review, vol. 2011, iss.

A significant example of such an innovation to support the knowledge economy is the installation of professors (lectoren) at Universities of Applied Sciences (U.A.S.) (hogescholen) in 2001. The objectives of their research groups (kenniskringen) are: 1) development of knowledge to improve professional practice, 2) professional development of lecturers2 (hogeschooldocenten), (3) improvement of the curriculum based on practice-based research and professional experience, and (4) circulation of knowledge between society and U.A.S. Until recently U.A.S. in the Netherlands were teaching-only institutions. Since 2001 research has become part of their corporate identity (Ministerie van OC&W and HBO-raad, 2001).
