De centrale conclusie is dat hun succes geen toeval is. De onderzochte clusters zijn alle het resultaat van een goede en actiegerichte samenwerking tussen bedrijven, kennisinstellingen en overheden. Die samenwerking is langdurig. Het lectoraat destilleerde vijf voorwaarden voor een succesvol innovatiesysteem uit het onderzoek.
