2012, Part of book or chapter of book (, pp. 84-87)In order to support aging in place, Dutch elderly that cannot live at home any longer are housed in Assisted Living Facilities (ALF’s). Here they live as independently as possible and can rely on care and services 24 hours a day. Nowadays the intended home-like atmosphere is threatened by the increasing number of inhabitants needing high levels of care. Initiators have to cope with this issue and have to decide on the most desirable scale of ALFs and the optimal mix of different user groups and facilities. The Assisted Living Atlas shows a huge number of different projects in a standard way, in order to help decision makers to be aware of different solutions and to find best practices.
2012, Part of book or chapter of book (, pp. 137-155)On the basis of empirical research, a competence-based model of the internationalization process of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) is developed. The model focuses on so-called International Market-Entry Core Competencies (IMECC), which are global management competences considered crucial during the formulation of a market-entry strategy. This article aims to emphasize the relevance of international managerial competencies as fundamental resources for the internationalization of SMEs and their relation with the market-entry modes.
2015, Article / Letter to editor (Facilities, vol. 33, iss. 1/2, (2015), pp. 2-19)Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the spatial implications of new learning theories and the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in higher education. Design/methodology/approach – Based on a review of the literature, a theoretical framework has been developed that visualises the spatial implications of developments in higher education. To further explore spatial configurations that support changes in education, a comparative floor plan analysis was carried out at four Dutch institutes of higher education. Findings – The findings show that the traditional classroom space is progressively being replaced by a variety of learning settings to support contemporary learning activities. Practical implications – The research findings contribute to a better understanding of the alignment of learning space to the evolving needs that come from new ways of learning, supported by advanced ICT, and can be used to support space planning in higher education. Originality/value – This paper builds upon findings from different disciplines: Facilities Management and Corporate Real Estate Management (suitability of floor plans) and Theory of Education (the pedagogical approaches and pedagogical assumptions those floor plans convey).
2012, Part of book or chapter of book (, pp. 186)Although quality management has a long tradition and plays an important role in operational and managerial activities in organizations nowadays, it also seems to be less clear and less visible. In this paper the focus is on the rise and fall of quality management in organizations and the impact this has had on professionals. Starting with an historical perspective, comments will be made on the trends in literature and the opinions and experiences from both entrepreneurs and managers. It is argued that in the near future professionals will have to focus on entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship, demanddriven contributions, working simultaneously with commitment and assurance paradigm and also working on multiple value optimization. Then the professionals’ role and impact in organizations will stay visible and valuable.
2009, Article in monograph or in proceedings (Proceedings of the 10th International CINet Conference)In striving for an excellent position regarding competitors in all aspects of management and operations, organizations benefit from establishing strategic cooperations. With allies they can be more successful in surviving the hyper competition. From this survey we derived the frequency, importance and effect of instruments also regarding the organization’s collaborative maturity. The results give food to the assumption that the application of ‘hard’ Continuous Improvement tools (CI) and techniques are of more relevance in achieving the goals of cooperation than ‘soft’ CI-tools.
2020, Article / Letter to editor (Nutrients, vol. 12, iss. 3, (2020))Nutrition is one of the modifiable risk factors for cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia, and is therefore highly relevant in the context of prevention. However, knowledge of dietary quality in clinical populations on the spectrum of AD dementia is lacking, therefore we studied the association between dietary quality and cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and controls. We included 357 participants from the NUDAD project (134 AD dementia, 90 MCI, 133 controls). We assessed adherence to dietary guidelines (components: vegetables, fruit, fibers, fish, saturated fat, trans-fat, salt, and alcohol), and cognitive performance (domains: memory, language, visuospatial functioning, attention, and executive functioning). In the total population, linear regression analyses showed a lower vegetable intake is associated with poorer global cognition, visuospatial functioning, attention and executive functioning. In AD dementia, lower total adherence to dietary guidelines and higher alcohol intake were associated with poorer memory, a lower vegetable intake with poorer global cognition and executive functioning, and a higher trans-fat intake with poorer executive functioning. In conclusion, a suboptimal diet is associated with more severely impaired cognition-this association is mostly attributable to a lower vegetable intake and is most pronounced in AD dementia.
2012, Article / Letter to editor (International Journal of Database Management Systems (IJDMS), vol. 4, iss. 6, (2012), pp. 27-48)Storing large amounts of data in an efficient way from the point of view of very fast retrieval is animportant requirement for many industries like KEMA, a company offering consulting, testing andcertification in the energy business. Because their relational database could not cope fast enough with thelarge amounts of data involved, an alternative way for data storage was proposed, called HierarchicalData Format 5 (HDF5). HDF5 is a data model, a library, and file format for storing and managing data.Four hierarchical designs for storing and retrieving the large amounts of data involved were investigated.A benchmark was carried out in order to know which hierarchical structure would perform best.Eventually, a benchmark between HDF5 and MS SQL Server was carried out. It could be shown thatHDF5 performs four (4) times better for inserting and even 200 times better for retrieving data than theMS. SQL Server.
2014, Article / Letter to editor (Technological Forecasting and Social Change, (2014))Complex innovations involve multi-organizational ecologies consisting of a myriad of different actors. This study investigates how innovation activities can be interpreted in the context of multi-organizational ecologies. Taking a project-level perspective, this study proposes a typology of four activity sets that are relevant in this context: strategic predevelopment, engineering, commercialization, and project management. The authors use archival and survey data on government-funded sustainable energy projects in the Netherlands to study the validity and relevance of the typology and show that the typology has discriminant and convergent validity. Results on the prevalence of the activity sets show that all four activity sets occur in sustainable energy projects, but to differing degrees. Furthermore, the typology is relevant because it helps to explain differences in innovation performance for complex innovations. Two activity sets – strategic predevelopment activities and commercialization activities – have significant and positive effects on innovation performance, whereas the two other activity sets – engineering and project management – do not. The data show that for sustainable energy projects, commercialization activities are often insufficient, but important to reach high innovation performance.
2011, Article / Letter to editor (Scandinavian Journal of Trauma, Resuscitation and Emergency Medicine, vol. 21, iss. 9, (2011))A gap between guidelines or protocols and clinical practice often exists, which may result in patients not receiving appropriate care. Therefore, the objectives of this systematic review were (1) to give an overview of professionals’ adherence to (inter)national guidelines and protocols in the emergency medical dispatch, prehospital and emergency department (ED) settings, and (2) to explore which factors influencing adherence were described in studies reporting on adherence. PubMed (including MEDLINE), CINAHL, EMBASE and the Cochrane database for systematic reviews were systematically searched. Reference lists of included studies were also searched for eligible studies. Identified articles were screened on title, abstract and year of publication (=1990) and were included when reporting on adherence in the eligible settings. Following the initial selection, articles were screened full text and included if they concerned adherence to a (inter)national guideline or protocol, and if the time interval between data collection and publication date was <10 years. Finally, articles were assessed on reporting quality. Each step was undertaken by two independent researchers. Thirty-five articles met the criteria, none of these addressed the emergency medical dispatch setting or protocols. Median adherence ranged from 7.8-95% in the prehospital setting, and from 0-98% in the ED setting. In the prehospital setting, recommendations on monitoring came with higher median adherence percentages than treatment recommendations. For both settings, cardiology treatment recommendations came with relatively low median adherence percentages. Eight studies identified patient and organisational factors influencing adherence. The results showed that professionals’ adherence to (inter)national prehospital and emergency department guidelines shows a wide variation, while adherence in the emergency medical dispatch setting is not reported. As insight in influencing factors for adherence in the emergency care settings is minimal, future research should identify such factors to allow the development of strategies to improve adherence and thus improve quality of care.

2015, Article / Letter to editor (Facilities, vol. 33, iss. 13/14, (2015), pp. 775-793)Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore how corporate real estate (CRE) managers of higher education institutions formulate their CRE strategies and CRE operating decisions to align CRE with the corporate strategies of these institutions. Design/methodology/approach – An analytical alignment framework has been developed, which was used to study the possible and actual connections between CRE management and corporate management at 13 large Dutch Universities of Applied Sciences. The data collection included a content analysis of the strategic plans of these universities and interviews with the CRE managers. Findings – The research findings show several layers of how CRE managers aim to align CRE with corporate goals to add value to the organization. It appears that the CRE strategies in-use are more clearly aligned with the corporate strategies than with the espoused CRE strategies. Practical implications – The paper emphasizes the relevance of involving CRE management in corporate decision-making to contribute to the attainment of the organizational objectives with an efficient and effective accommodation. Originality/value – Substantial changes in learning and teaching practices in higher education lead to evolving corporate strategies, which result in the need for aligned CRE strategies and CRE operating decisions. This paper makes practitioners and researchers aware of the differences between alignment-based espoused CRE strategies and alignment that results from CRE strategies in-use in the field of higher education. The findings and insights might be applicable in other sectors as well.

2015, Article / Letter to editor (Dialogue in Praxis, vol. 4 (17), iss. 1-2, (2015), pp. 28-29)This article introduces the concept of alliance in youth care. The concept of (therapeutic) alliance originates in adult psychotherapy and related research. Alliance refers to the working relationship between youth care workers and their clients. Within this concept, personal (emotional) and task related components can be discerned. The body of psychotherapy research suggests that a positive alliance is perhaps the most powerful predictor of a positive outcome of the collaboration between clients and care professionals. The question that arises there from is: does this also hold true for youth care? Firstly, this article provides a brief overview of alliance, based on the research in psychotherapy (where the concept was thoroughly analysed). Secondly the article gives an overview of alliance in youth care, researched by the Research Group for Key Factors in Youth Care. It is presented as a vital factor within the conceptual theoretical frame of the Integrative Change Factors (ICF) model for youth care. The concept of the ICF model is followed by a description of the development of the YCAS, an instrument to measure alliance in youth care. In conclusion the article reflects on goals for future research on the concept of alliance, aimed at assessing its importance for youth care provision and at providing professionals with valid tools to boost and uphold their alliance building and monitoring skills.
2022, Article / Letter to editor (International Journal of Sports Science & Coaching, (2022))This study examined the influence of both anthropometric and physical performance determinants on the likelihood to be selected to progress through a talent identification and development programme in young tennis. Data were collected in 538 young tennis players (323 males and 215 females) from 6 age categories (U8-U13). A principal component analysis was used to generate one anthropometric determinant (based on body height, body weight and maturity offset) and four physical performance determinants: speed and agility (based on 5 m sprint, 20 m sprint and 505 change of direction test); jumping power (based on standing broad jump and standing broad jump in series); motor coordination (based on balancing backwards and jumping sideways) and tennis ball control (based on a throw and catch test and hold tennis ball up test). For all determinants, tertiles were generated for every age category and both sexes separately. Univariate binary logistic regressions were performed to examine the influence of each determinant on the chances to be selected to progress in the talent identification and development programme. Significant odds ratios were found for all included anthropometric and physical performance determinants (p < 0.05), ranging from 0.26 to 7.50 in the male young tennis players and from 0.18 to 6.87 in the female young tennis players. The included determinants influenced selection chances mostly in the early age categories (U8-U10) as opposed to the later age categories (U11-U13). Future research should examine the influence of additional determinants (such as tennis (match-play) performance) on the selection chances to progress through a talent identification and development programme.

2014, Article / Letter to editor (The Review of International Comparative Management, vol. 15, iss. 2, (2014), pp. 154-173)Recent efforts of the European Union to integrate new member states such as Romania expand to the social economy sector as well. Works by Hoogendoorn et al. (2010) and Kerlin (2010) regard Europe as accommodating two schools of thought related to social entrepreneurship: EMES and the UK - social enterprise. Both views place great emphasis on social enterprise as the main indicator of the social entrepreneurial phenomena for the European continent.
2010, Article / Letter to editor (Netherlands Journal of Critical Care, vol. 14, iss. 1, (2010), pp. 10-15)A psycho-organic disorder such as delirium is a frequently occurring and serious disorder especially on Intensive Care units. Nowadays, more attention is paid to this problem by physicians, nurses and by researchers, but assessment of delirium in all ICU patients is still not common practice. If patients are not screened for delirium in a standard manner, once or several times a day, the delirium diagnose will be missed. In this systematic review we describe and analyse six delirium screening instruments available from the literature: the Cognitive Test for Delirium (CTD), the abbreviated CTD, Intensive Care Delirium Screening Checklist (ICDSC), Delirium Detection Score (DDS), NEECHAM confusion scale and the Confusion Assessment Method-ICU (CAM-ICU). Each assessment tool its characteristics, reliability and validity testing is briefly described. We conclude that important delirium criteria are not integrated into some screening tools (CTD and aCTD, DDS), or an important group of ICU patients cannot be tested (NEECHAM). The ICDSC and the CAM-ICU appear to represent the most feasible instruments for delirium screening in the ICU. Of these two tests, the CAM-ICU prevails because of the validated Dutch version and its reported high sensitivity and specificity.
2012, Article / Letter to editor (Journal of Neurology, vol. 259, iss. 9, (2012), pp. 1840-1847)The objective of this study is to investigate the value of dual-task performance for the prediction of falls inpatients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Two hundred sixty three patients with PD (H&Y 1–3, 65.2 ± 7.9 years)walked two times along a 10-m trajectory, both under single-task and dual-task (DT) conditions (combined with an auditory Stroop task). To control for a cueing effect, Stroop stimuli were presented at variable or fixed 1- or 2-s intervals. The auditory Stroop task was also performed alone. Dual-task costs were calculated for gait speed, stride length, stride time, stride time variability, step and stride regularity, step symmetry and Stroop composite scores(accuracy/reaction time). Subsequently, falls were registered prospectively for 1 year (monthly assessments). Patients were categorized as non-recurrent fallers (no or 1 fall) or recurrent fallers ([1 falls). Recurrent fallers (35%) had a significantly higher disease severity, lower MMSE scores, and higher Timed ‘‘Up & Go’’ test scores than non recurrent fallers. Under DT conditions, gait speed and stride lengths were significantly decreased. Stride time, stride time variability, step and stride regularity, and step symmetry did not change under DT conditions. Stroop dual-task costs were only significant for the 2-s Stroop interval trials. Importantly, recurrent fallers did not show different dual-task costs compared to non-recurrent fallers on any of the gait or Stroop parameters. These results did not change after correction for baseline group differences. Deterioration of gait or Stroop performance under dual task conditions was not associated with prospective falls in this large sample of patients with PD.
2012, Article / Letter to editor (Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business, vol. 17, iss. 1, (2012), pp. 27-43)The contribution of purchasing to the development and growth of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the overall performance of supply chain has been neither rigorously examined nor empirically substantiated. This paper provides empirical evidence on how purchasing variables (relationship, product quality and quantity, and price) contribute to the development and growth of SMEs in Tanzania. In this study, it was found that poor relationships between suppliers and SMEs and low quality of products sold by SMEs affect the provision of service to customers and lead to poor development and growth of SMEs while high prices of products and low quantity of goods have no direct effect. Conclusions drawn include: SMEs can improve the supplier relationship, e.g., by finding alternative product sources at low prices but not at the expense of quality, and by ordering the products from suppliers on time to avoid late delivery and stock depletion.
2009, Article / Letter to editor (Assessment and Evaluation in Higher Education, vol. 35, iss. 1, (2009), pp. 55-70)In an effort to gain better understanding of the assessment of prior informal and non-formal learning, this article explores assessors’ approaches to portfolio assessment. Through this portfolio assessment, candidates had requested exemptions from specific courses within an educational programme or admission to the programme based on their prior learning. The assessors judged the portfolios according to set rating criteria, and subsequently discussed their approaches. Their decision-making processes, perception of portfolio use in the Assessment of Prior Learning (APL), deciding factors in portfolio assessment and use of the rating criteria were key elements in this discussion. The results show that they do use the rating criteria as an indicator in decision-making, but have mixed perceptions regarding the fairness of APL portfolio assessment. They perceive the portfolio evidence in combination with sound argumentation as the deciding elements in portfolio assessment.

2011, Article / Letter to editor (Wetenschappelijk Tijdschrift voor Ergotherapie, vol. 2011, iss.
2009, Article / Letter to editor (Tijdschrift voor Hoger Onderwijs, iss.

2015, Article / Letter to editor (Journal of Aging & Health, vol. 2015, iss. December, (2015), pp. 1-29)Objectives: While poor health contributes to early work exits, it is less clear how early work exits affect health. This study therefore examines changes in health associated with retirement. Method: Survey data from gainfully employed individuals aged 57 to 66 in 2002 were used to assess changes in health status and behaviors associated with retirement (49%) 5 years later (N = 546). Results: Compared with workers, retirees were more likely to report improvements in mental health (odds ratio [OR] = 1.67), and less likely to report mental health deteriorations (OR = 0.56). Retirees were more likely to both increase (OR = 2.03) and reduce (OR = 1.87) their alcohol intake, and to increase physical activity (OR = 2.01) and lose weight (OR = 1.75). Discussion: As welfare states aim to extend working life to counteract repercussions of population aging, findings on possible health benefits for retirees may warrant more focus on the pros and cons of a prolonged working life.
2017, Article / Letter to editor (European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery, vol. 43, iss. 4, (2017), pp. 513-524)Background Pre-hospital spinal immobilisation by emergency medical services (EMS) staff is currently the standard of care in cases of suspected spinal column injuries. There is, however, a lack of data on the characteristics of patients who received spinal immobilisation during the pre-hospital phase and on the adverse effects of immobilisation. The objectives of this study were threefold. First, we determined the pre-hospital characteristics of blunt trauma patients with suspected spinal column injuries who were immobilised by EMS staff. Second, we assessed the choices made by EMS staff regarding spinal immobilisation techniques and reasons for immobilisation. Third, we researched the possible adverse effects of immobilisation. Design A retrospective observational study in a cohort of blunt trauma patients. Study method Data of blunt trauma patients with suspected spinal column injuries were collected from one EMS organisation between January 2008 and January 2013. Coded data and free text notes were analysed. Results A total of 1082 patients were included in this study. Spinal immobilisation was applied in 96.3 % of the patients based on valid pre-hospital criteria. In 2.1 % of the patients immobilisation was not based on valid criteria. Data of 1.6 % patients were missing. Main reasons for spinal immobilisation were posterior midline spinal tenderness (37.2 % of patients) and painful distracting injuries (13.5 % of patients). Spinal cord injury (SCI) was suspected in 5.7 % of the patients with posterior midline spinal tenderness. A total of 15.8 % patients were immobilised using non-standard methods. The reason for departure from the standard method was explained for 3 % of these patients. Reported adverse effects included pain (n = 10, 0.9 %,); shortness of breath (n = 3, 0.3 %); combativeness or anxiety (n = 6, 0.6 %); and worsening of pain when supine (n = 1, 0.1 %). Conclusion/recommendation Spinal immobilisation was applied in 96.3 % of all included patients based on pre-hospital criteria. We found that consensus among EMS staff on how to interpret the criterion 'distracting injury' was lacking. Furthermore, the adverse effects of spinal immobilisation were incompletely documented in pre-hospital care reports. To provide validated information on potential symptoms of SCI, a uniform EMS scoring system for motoric assessment should be developed.
2022, Article / Letter to editor (Health Equity, vol. 6, iss. 1, (2022), pp. 40-48)Purpose: Appointment attendance is critical in monitoring health and well-being of children. Low income Medicaid-insured families with newborns often experience social risks that may affect attendance. This project sought to characterize social risk factors present at first newborn visits predictive of future appointment nonattendance. Methods: Retrospective cohort study of minority and Medicaid-insured population at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children using a standardized social risk screener administered at first newborn visits as part of routine clinical care. In total, 720 survey responses between December 2016 and June 2017 were correlated with electronic health record-derived sociodemographic and appointment attendance data in the first 6 months of life. Nonattendance included missed and canceled appointments. Caregiver-reported social risk factors were included as covariates in linear regressions predicting proportion nonattendance outcomes. Results: Newborn caregivers identified many social risk factors including mental health diagnoses (14%), lack of child care support (45%), and food insecurity (9%). Approximately 74% had nonattendance with 41% missing or canceling a quarter or more appointments. Number of siblings (p<0.01) and maternal age (p<0.01) were most predictive for nonattendance, respectively. Other social risks were not significant except for maternal mental health (p=0.01) among those identifying number of risk factors above cohort average (16%). Conclusion: Screening of newborns at first medical visits can be used to characterize social risks. Most social risk factors at first visits were not strongly predictive of nonattendance, although our results suggested associations between non-attendance and maternal demographics, mental health and household makeup.
2011, Article / Letter to editor (Tussenstand, vol. 2012, (2011))Since the eighties, Dutch residents of care homes have been housed in Assisted Living Facilities (ALFs) in order to age in place and live with higher social quality of housing. Scale, group mix and social quality of housing of these ALFs has not yet been explored. Initiators decide on experience and intuition or guided by policy and exploitation. The question arises: Are choices in scale for assisted living facilities based on quality factors or guided by institutional influences as legislation and financing? A desk research of 593 projects was made besides a multiple case study in 24 projects. Significant relations were found, partly in line with presuppositions on quality drivers, partly inexplicable. Comparing these incongruities with changes in legislation and financing, plausible relations were found. This leads to the conclusion that decisions for ALFs are based more on institutional factors and less strictly on quality choices than is avowed.
